Timun Mas
Long time ago, living a couple of farmers. They lived in a village near the forest. They lived happily. Unfortunately they had no child.
Every day they prayed to God. They prayed to have a child. One day a giant passed where they reside. The giant heard their prayer.
Giant : Hey the couple of farmers, I can help you!! Hwohoho….
Then the couple of farmers came out of their house and met the giant.
Couple : who are you? Are you sure about that?
Giant : Yeah, I can help you, but I give you with a term.
Then the giant gave them with a seeds of cucumber.
Giant : Plant seed of this. Later you will soon get a female child.
Couple : Thank you giant..
Giant : But there is a condition, at the age of 17 years the child must be submitted to me.
Without thinking any longer, they agreed the giant’s offer, because they wanted to have a child.
Husband and wife planted the seed of cucumber. Every day they took care of the plant that grew. Days after days, months after months, and then bore a cucumber with golden color.
Then the cucumber became larger and heavier. When the fruit was ripe, they took it carefully, and slit the fruit. Suddenly, in the fruit they found an infant of girl who was very beautiful. Couple was very happy, they gave the baby a name Timun Mas.
Year after year passed. Timun mas grew into a beautiful girl. Both parents were very proud of her. But they became very afraid, because in the anniversary of Timun Mas at 17 the giant would be back. The giant would took back that promise to take Timun Mas.
The couple of farmers could not fulfill their promise to the giant. Therefore, they looked for a way to break the promise. They knew the man who could help them. He’s a hermit who lived in the mountain.
Timun Mas’ mother went to hermit’s place. When she met the hermit, she asked for his help.
Mother : Excuse me, Sir!
Hermit : Yea, please come here! I know why you come here and meet me. This is for you!.
Mother : What is this?
Hermit : This is cloth pouch. Give this cloth pouch to your child! This cloth pouch contains salt, chili, seeds of cucumber, and shrimp paste. If the giant chases her, tell your child to spread this contents, one by one.
Timun mas’ mother thanked him and went home.
In the afternoon, the giant came.
Giant : Where is Timun Mas??
Farmers tried to be calm.
Father : Wait a moment. Timun Mas is playing. My wife will call her.
Giant : Yeah, I give you opportunity to call her! But you must be quickly.
Timun mas’ mother met her child and asked her to run away from the giant, and she gave her a cloth pouch. She told Timun mas about the contents of it, and the way to use them. Actually Timun Mas was very afraid, but she believed the gift from her mother would help her.
Mother : Run my daughter! Run as fast as you can!!
Timun mas’ mother asked her to go quickly.
This couple of farmers were very sad because they were not willing if their child became giant’s food. Giant waited for a long time. He was not patient. He knew, that the couple of farmers lied him. Then the giant destroyed the hut of the farmers. After that the giant followed Timun Mas to forest.
Giant chase Timun Mas immediately. Timun Mas was taking a handful of salt from the cloth pouch when the giant ran close to her. Then she spreaded the salt to the giant. Suddenly a wide sea also unfold. Giant forced himself to swim with great difficulty.
Timun Mas ran again, but then the giant came closer immediately. Timun Mas took bizarre objects from a cloth bag again. She took the handful of chili and she threw the chili to the giant. At once there were tree branches and sharp thorns which made the giant trapped. The giant was crying in great pain, while Timun Mas ran to save herself.
But the giant was really strong. He kept trying to capture Timun Mas. So Timun Mas had to take the third bizarre object. She threw the seeds of cucumber. At once they grew into a lot of cucumber trees. Giant was very tired and hungry. He also ate the fresh cucumbers by himself. Because of to much eating, giant fell asleep.
Timun Mas kept escaping. But she ran out of energy. Unfortunately the giant woke up. Giant almost caught her. Timun mas was very terrified. She also threw the last tool, a handful of shrimp paste. Again miracles happened. The shrimp paste became a lake of mud. Giant fell into it. His hands almost reached Timun Mas, but the lake of mud pulled him back. Giant was in panic, he could not breathe, then submerged.
Finally Timun Mas relieved. She returned home. Timun mas’ parents were very happy to see Timun Mas safe. They cheered “Thank you God. You have saved my girl,” said them delightly.
Since that time Timun Mas could live peacefully with her parents. They were happy everafter without having fear again.
